First Family of the New Year: Lysandra Cook Oahu Family Photographer

It is the new year and I have big plans to update my blog more often. There are many sessions that didn't make it up on the blog last year, some were because of internet shyness on the part of the family but most were because I didn't make the time. I pledge to do a much better job this year. You can always view my Facebook business page to keep up on my latest work.

This beautiful, young family was my first session of 2012. We met at Kalama Beach Park in Kailua, one of my favorite places to shoot on the Windward side.

Their one year old cutie was not shy in the least. In fact when we met in the parking lot before the shoot he immediately put his arms out for me to hold him. As soon as we hit the park he wanted down and was on the go. I swear the little guy was the fastest crawler ever.

He also had the biggest smile.

He was zooming around while I shot a few pictures of Mom and Dad.

He loved playing with Dad.

He loved exploring the sand, and eating a little.

He was fascinated with the sights and sounds of the beach.

I had a wonderful first shoot of the new year! Here is to many more!

It was such a pleasure to shoot this beautiful couple at Ala Moana Beach Park. This lovely lady has been living and working in Hawaii. Unfortunately for her and her adorable boyfriend her visa has expired and she is heading home to Japan. I know they have planned his first visit for February.

It was my pleasure to shoot them together during their last days as a couple on Oahu.

Aren't they adorable? I wish them all the best in the future.

This sweet family found me on the Operation Love ReUnited website and came for a pre-deployment session. Mom, Dad, and both boys all looked like they walked out of a catalog, what a handsome family!

When they first arrived at Kalama Beach Park the youngest one was a bit shy and not interested in having his picture taken.

These lovely shots of Mom and Dad were taken with a grumpy little guy wrapped around Mom's leg.

Soon he started to warm up and show his goofy personality.

These two handsome boys are sure proud of Dad.

Such a fun, beautiful family.

You may recognize this adorable family as I have been lucky enough to have photographed them twice before. This is the first session we have had since the addition of their beautiful baby girl.

She is growing so fast! I can't believe she is already two months old. Can you believe those precious baby cheeks?

Big brother was a bit shy at first but ended up being quite the silly guy! I love his "cheese" smile.

In the end he was all smiles.

This sweet family met me at Bellows for a family session. The little guys were super sweet and super silly. It was a ton of fun and I know Mom's chicken dance over my shoulder helped with the genuine smiles I was able to capture.

I just love the babies face in this shot. He was such a ball of laughter.

I am a member of HeArt Speak, a non-profit with the vision to unite the individual efforts of animal artists & animal rescues into collective action for social change. I am always looking for ways to use my talents to help local no-kill shelters.

I am also a firm believer that rescued pets bring a special kind of love into your home.

This week we added a new rescue to our loving family. Meet Lucky, a 3 month Sharpei/Lab mix who was rescued out in Waianae. We are so happy he has found a forever home here with us.

Spike, our previous rescue Sharpei is enjoying having Lucky around but is relaxing until we can all hit the trails once Lucky has all his shots.

Charlie, our cat we adopted from Joey's Feline Friends, is not so sure he is happy to have Lucky around. I am sure they will be able to relax around each other soon.

I encourage you to adopt a pet today! Spay and neuter your animals and always be a responsible pet owner.

Shandez, Damien, and their sweet dog, Inca met me at Waimanalo Beach Park. I really enjoyed capturing the loving bond between Shandez and Damien. They are a sweet, young couple with a strong bond.

We enjoyed our attempts at including Inca in the photos. She was a little unsure about posing to say the least. She is a real sweet dog that they adopted from a local shelter.

I enjoy shooting at Waimanalo because of the beautiful scenery and the lovely afternoon light.

This fun family came to visit Oahu from California. We met up on the North Shore at Shark's Cove and took a walk down the bike path and out to Ke Iki Beach. It was a beautiful day with a gorgeous sunset.

I love the Shower Trees that hang over the bike path.

Ke Iki Beach has some fun graffiti and lovely lava rock.

I have been a volunteer photographer for Op Love for just over a year. During that time I have had the opportunity to shoot many lovely families and adorable couples. I have been amazed at the love and strong family bonds I have seen at every session.

This session was no exception. I had the pleasure of shooting this beautiful new baby girl, her big sister, her mother, and her grandmother.

This little girl is such a doll. I can't wait for her daddy to have the album in his hands. I am sure he can't wait to come home and hold all of his girls.

When I book a session I always include a pre-session consultation either by phone or in person (your choice). We discuss the basics of what to expect during the session and I start to get to know you. I want you to feel comfortable and have fun during our session. Uncomfortable and stiff doesn't photograph well.
I will give feedback on what to wear and we will discuss the type of products you are planning to purchase.

During this discussion clients always ask about the perfect location and often ask about the location of a specific image they saw on my website. I decided to do a series of blog posts showcasing my favorite locations.

Meet Waimanalo Beach Park located on the windward side of Oahu.

I LOVE shooting at Waimanalo because it is a little undiscovered gem and is rarely crowded. I love that it has beautiful white sand and turquoise water with dramatic mountains in the background. I also love the beautiful Ironwood trees and small patches of grass along the shore. It offers a variety of backgrounds in one place. The beach park also has facilities for outfit changes and free parking.

This amazingly beautiful, loving, and smart girl is graduating this year. Between her trips back east to visit colleges we met up for senior pictures. I must say that I am in love with shooting teens and seniors, they are such fun and up for anything.

Hula in Kauai: Lysandra Cook Oahu Photography

Back in September I had the pleasure of traveling with my halau to Kauai. We were joined by our sister halau from Japan and we met up with our hula brothers and sisters from all over the islands and world.

Here are three of my lovely hula sisters, the one in the middle also happens to be my daughter.

Here is most of our gang. We took in some sights, including a trip back to Fern Grotto where we danced Aloha Kauai for the other visitors.

We worked hard to clear a sacred site. It was hard, sweaty work but we all felt blessed to be able to work such special land.

After the hard work we went up and danced on another sacred site. It was amazing to dance on the same land that has been danced on for hundreds of years. We were graced with a double rainbow while we were dancing. I often wish I could hula with my 5D strapped to my chest. These were taken as the sun went down after we danced.

We chanted up the sun and danced at another sacred site with many other dancers from all over. It was amazing to share such aloha.

And we had fun, fun, fun.

That is my daughter and two of her best friends on the left. On the right is me and my hula sister from Japan.

I am so happy to have my hula ohana.

Last spring some friends and I donated a brunch/photo op package to our kids' school for a fundraiser. My friends would provide the food and carry it up a mountain while I got off easy with taking pictures of the adventure.

The lovely woman who bought the package in the silent auction scheduled her brunch for today. Last night and this morning it poured and poured. As I pulled into the parking lot this morning it started to pour again but thankfully it cleared up quickly and turned into a beautiful morning.

I am constantly amazed by the military families I meet. Not being military and never really interacting with military families before I joined Operation Love ReUnited I never gave much thought to what it was like committing your life and the life of your family to serving our country. There is such strength and honor in each of these young families. I am amazed at honored by the daily sacrifice they make.

This beautiful family (aren't they all just gorgeous?)is getting ready to say good-bye to Dad as he ships out again. I am so happy that this time he will get to take a little piece of his sweet family with him.

Welcome Home!

I had the amazing experience of getting to document a soldier reuniting with his family after deployment. It was wonderful to see the tears of joy in his wife's and his mother's eyes.

It was amazing to see him get to hold his 2 year old boy and to meet and hold his newborn son.

I can only imagine what it must be like to have these kinds of separations and reunions. Thank you for serving our country and thank you for letting me document your reunion.

I had a family session scheduled at the beach at the Hilton Hawaii Villages and I went a little early to check things out and scout around. While cruising around the beach and lagoon area I was approached by a bride and groom holding a point and shoot camera. They said they had just gotten married and wanted some photos. The groom said that when they had their pictures taken earlier in the day he left his sunglasses on for all the shots because it was so bright. They were hoping I could take a few shots on their camera. I was happy to oblige but given the bright day and the strong contrast from shade to full sun their camera had difficulty on full auto. Rather than attempt to figure out their camera I offered to shoot a few shots and send them the files.

Congratulations Michael and your beautiful wife whose name I didn't catch. May you have many happy years together.

I had the great pleasure of photographing a beautiful young couple who were visiting Hawaii from the mainland. We met up at Turtle Bay where they were spending a week. They were not only gorgeous but up for anything, including sitting on the sharp and insanely hard coral. I enjoyed working with them, they were so easy going and fun. I would never have guessed they are both in the WWE and TOUGH!

North Carolina Wedding: Travel for Lysandra Cook Oahu Photographer

I had the pleasure of flying to North Carolina last week to shoot the wedding of my good friend's niece. The young couple were gorgeous both inside and out. They were surrounded by loving friends and family that made the day amazingly special. I was honored to have been apart of such a wonderful event.

Operation: Love Reunited is a federal non-profit organization of professional photographers that have joined together to offer our military men and women FREE special sessions with their families.

These patriotic sessions are designed to boost the morale of our service men and women in times of deployement.

Military families are eligible for two sessions per year per deployment.

Joey's Feline Friends: Lysandra Cook Oahu Pet Photographer

While I was dropping off the cards I ran in to visit with the kitties and take some pictures. It is amazing how many sweet and wonderful cats and kittens are there just waiting for love.

Tae Kwon Do: Lysandra Cook Oahu Photographer

My children have been taking Tae Kwon Do for about 5 years. I think it is a wonderful sport that builds self control, perseverance, and confidence. I can't help but beam with pride when I watch my 13 year old daughter kick boys that out weigh her out of the ring during sparring class.

Personal Project: Lysandra Cook Oahu Photographer

I recently started a 365 Project with my own children. This means I must take and post a picture of each of them on Flickr for an entire year. I was interested in the project as a way to capture this year in the life of my children. I had found that as I was taking more pictures of other people and their children I was taking fewer pictures of my own. I would still bring out my camera for events but had been taking far fewer every day shots.
I also wanted to be able to watch them grow and change over the year.

We are on day 49 (we did take a week long break while my son was on the Big Island for a school trip). Here are a few of my favorites.

I love this one of my son because it shows how very handsome he is. I love his intense eyes.

I love this one of my daughter for similar reasons. I think it shows how beautiful she is.

This one is Grandma's favorite.

The others I love show personality and the true goofiness that permeates our life.

Our family took a drive up the windward side of Oahu and spent the day exploring this beautiful island we live on. I am starting to wonder if I should start to target the senior portrait market, teens are so fun. I had the opportunity to take a group of friends out for a shoot before a school dance.

It was this beautiful girl's birthday.

The group was full of laughter and fun.

We made our weekly trip up to Joey's Feline Friends in Kaneohe. The kids swept out rooms, changed litter boxes, fed and water the cats, and enjoyed giving the kitties some attention and love.

These cats are all ready for adoption today.

I had the pleasure of shooting 1 year old twin girls yesterday, what fun! These little sweeties were a bit slow to warm but soon were smiling to melt our hearts. I was sure glad to have Katherine there to help, 1 year old twins and cake require many hands on deck.

This lovely lady wanted a few pictures of her and her sweet dog. She and her two brothers came in to get a picture of the three siblings to give to their mom for Christmas.

This is my beautiful hula sister and her two children. They wanted to give Dad a surprise for Christmas.

I had a fun session with three dogs and their beautiful owner, Farren. We met at KMCB, Farren's husband is deployed in Afghanistan and she wanted to send him some pictures of her and their babies. Their babies are a Great Dane, a Rottweiler, and a Schnauzer. We had a lot of fun and I am forever thankful that Katherine was able to come and assist, three dogs makes for an interesting shoot. We all came home with a bit of drool and a lot of sand all over us.

Over the last two Saturdays I have been teaming with the Petco in Pearl City to help raise money for local animals shelters. We have been shooting pictures of pets with Santa. We did about 130 pictures with many, many dogs, about 10 cats, and 1 bunny. Here is the last shot I took, 7 dogs in 1 picture.

I had the pleasure of shooting a young couple and their 4 month baby girl, Sarena. We met at Haiku Gardens in Kaneohe, what a lovely location! Sarena and her family were tons of fun. I was amazed at how happy little Sarena was. She was a real trooper through 3 outfit changes, her mom said she slept like a rock the rest of the day.

I had the pleasure of going to Joey's Feline Friends on Sunday. My daughter and her girlfriend worked hard cleaning litter boxes, sweeping, mopping, filling food and water bowls, and changing bedding while I took pictures and visited with all the loving kitties.

I am impressed that these two teens
have stayed so committed to Joey's over the last two years and work so hard for a cause they believe in. Joey's has a large number of committed volunteers but they could always use more. Visit their website to learn how to donate, volunteer, or adopt.

Another Wedding for the Oahu Pet Photographer

A good friend asked me to second shoot a wedding with her. I couldn't resist because it included a trip to Kauai. So yesterday I got up early and flew over for a long day of shooting. I think we got some great shots.

So as Hurricane Felicia heads toward our state I am still in Kauai. My family is flying in today and we are spending a few days enjoying the Garden Island. I hope Felicia mellows before she gets here and we can enjoy the beautiful island of Kauai.

Spike Enjoys a Hike

The number one dog in my life is Spike. He is a Shar Pei mix (the vet says with Lab) that we adopted from the local Humane Society. He is a wonderful dog. He enjoys hikes and long walks on the beach. His favorite hike is Pillboxes in Lanikai. Here is one of my favorite shots of him looking over the sunset on Enchanted Lakes.

Yesterday we were headed to Mariner's Ridge but decided we didn't want to hike in the pouring rain. We jumped back in the car and headed to Makapu'u. Spike enjoyed the Lighthouse trail but got a little upset when we went too far off road on what my kids call the Treacherous Hike.

We wanted to save his paws on the lava rock so we turned back and just enjoyed the view from the paved trail. Spike also got to share an apple with my daughter, he was thrilled.
